यदि तुम एक प्रश्न का जवाब हमें लाकर दे दोगे तो हम तुम्हारा राज्य लौटा देंगे, अन्यथा उम्र कैद के लिए तैयार रहें।

प्रश्न है.. एक स्त्री को सचमुच क्या चाहिए होता है ?

इसके लिए तुम्हारे पास एक महीने का समय है हर्षवर्धन ने यह प्रस्ताव स्वीकार कर लिया..

वे जगह जगह जाकर विदुषियों, विद्वानों और तमाम घरेलू स्त्रियों से लेकर नृत्यांगनाओं, वेश्याओं, दासियों और रानियों, साध्वी सब से मिले और जानना चाहा कि एक स्त्री को सचमुच क्या चाहिए होता है ? किसी ने सोना, किसी ने चाँदी, किसी ने हीरे जवाहरात, किसी ने प्रेम-प्यार, किसी ने बेटा-पति-पिता और परिवार तो किसी ने राजपाट और संन्यास की बातें कीं, मगर हर्षवर्धन को सन्तोष न हुआ।

महीना बीतने को आया और हर्षवर्धन को कोई संतोषजनक जवाब नहीं मिला..

किसी ने सुझाया कि दूर देश में एक जादूगरनी रहती है, उसके पास हर चीज का जवाब होता है शायद उसके पास इस प्रश्न का भी जवाब हो..

हर्षवर्धन अपने मित्र सिद्धराज के साथ जादूगरनी के पास गए और अपना प्रश्न दोहराया।

जादूगरनी ने हर्षवर्धन के मित्र की ओर देखते हुए कहा.. मैं आपको सही उत्तर बताऊंगी परंतु इसके एवज में आपके मित्र को मुझसे शादी करनी होगी ।

जादूगरनी बुढ़िया तो थी ही, बेहद बदसूरत थी, उसके बदबूदार पोपले मुंह से एक सड़ा दाँत झलका जब उसने अपनी कुटिल मुस्कुराहट हर्षवर्धन की ओर फेंकी ।

हर्षवर्धन ने अपने मित्र को परेशानी में नहीं डालने की खातिर मना कर दिया, सिद्धराज ने एक बात नहीं सुनी और अपने मित्र के जीवन की खातिर जादूगरनी से विवाह को तैयार हो गया

तब जादूगरनी ने उत्तर बताया..

"स्त्रियाँ, स्वयं निर्णय लेने में आत्मनिर्भर बनना चाहती हैं | "

यह उत्तर हर्षवर्धन को कुछ जमा, पड़ोसी राज्य के राजा ने भी इसे स्वीकार कर लिया और उसने हर्षवर्धन को उसका राज्य लौटा दिया

इधर जादूगरनी से सिद्धराज का विवाह हो गया, जादूगरनी ने मधुरात्रि को अपने पति से कहा..

चूंकि तुम्हारा हृदय पवित्र है और अपने मित्र के लिए तुमने कुरबानी दी है अतः मैं चौबीस घंटों में बारह घंटे तो रूपसी के रूप में रहूंगी और बाकी के बारह घंटे अपने सही रूप में, बताओ तुम्हें क्या पसंद है ?

सिद्धराज ने कहा.. प्रिये, यह निर्णय तुम्हें ही करना है, मैंने तुम्हें पत्नी के रूप में स्वीकार किया है, और तुम्हारा हर रूप मुझे पसंद है ।

जादूगरनी यह सुनते ही रूपसी बन गई, उसने कहा.. चूंकि तुमने निर्णय मुझ पर छोड़ दिया है तो मैं अब हमेशा इसी रूप में रहूंगी, दरअसल मेरा असली रूप ही यही है।

बदसूरत बुढ़िया का रूप तो मैंने अपने आसपास से दुनिया के कुटिल लोगों को दूर करने के लिए धरा हुआ था ।

अर्थात, सामाजिक व्यवस्था ने औरत को परतंत्र बना दिया है, पर मानसिक रूप से कोई भी महिला परतंत्र नहीं है।
