Daughter of satsangi parents.

 A rich Seth had seven sons. Six were married. The seventh daughter-in-law came, she was the daughter of satsangi parents. By going to satsang since childhood, the good values of satsang were deeply ingrained in him. The younger daughter-in-law saw that all the work in the house is done by the servants, while the sisters-in-law only cook the food, there is a lot of trouble in that too. The daughter-in-law had got good values that she should do her own work and live together with love. Health is good by doing one's own work.

She discovered the trick and took a bath early in the morning, dressed in clean clothes and already went to the kitchen. Sister-in-law interrupted but still she prepared the kitchen with great love and fed everyone with love. Everyone was very satisfied and happy.

During the day the mother-in-law went to the younger daughter-in-law and said: "Daughter-in-law! You are the youngest, why do you cook in the kitchen? You have six sisters."

Daughter-in-law: "Mother! When a hungry guest comes home, why do you feed him?"

"Daughter-in-law! It is written in the scriptures that the guest is the form of God. If he is satisfied after getting the food, then the one who serves the food gets a lot of virtue."

"Mother! Feeding a guest is virtuous, so is it a sin to feed the family members? If the guest has the form of God, then all the people in the house are also the form of God because God resides in the living being. And mother Food is yours, utensil is yours, all things are yours, if I do a little service by preparing a kitchen and feeding everyone with Bhagwad Bhaav, then will I be virtuous or not? Everyone will be satisfied by eating food with love, if they are happy then how much benefit It will happen! That's why mother! You let me make the kitchen. If I work hard, my health will also be good."

Mother-in-law thought that daughter-in-law is right. We consider it the smallest but its intelligence is the best.ʹ

Next day mother-in-law took bath early in the morning and sat down to prepare the kitchen. When the daughter-in-law saw, she said - "Mother! Why do you work hard?"

Mother-in-law said: "I am older than you. I will die soon. If I don't do good deeds now, then when will I do it?"

Daughter-in-law said - "Mother! What is the virtue in this? This is household work."

Mother-in-law said: "Is it a sin to do housework? When it is a virtue to feed hungry people, saints, then is it a sin to feed the family members? God resides in everyone."

After listening to the mother-in-law's words, all the daughters-in-law felt that 'we never thought about this. This trick is very good!ʹ Now the daughter-in-law who wakes up first should sit down to cook the kitchen. Earlier there was a feeling that 'You make a kitchen. Two more increased mother-in-law and younger daughter-in-law. In doing work ʹYou do, you do….ʹ This increases the work and the man decreases but ʹI do, I do….ʹ This makes the work light and the man increases.

The younger daughter-in-law was enthusiastic, thought that now it is the fourth day to make bread, then what to do? There was a wheat grinding mill in the house, she started grinding wheat from it. Machine milled flour gets burnt when filled in a hot sack, its roti is not tasty but the flour grinded by hand is cold and more nutritious and its roti is also tasty. When the younger daughter-in-law made her bread by grinding wheat, everyone started saying that today the taste of bread is very unique!

Mother-in-law said: "Daughter-in-law! Why do you grind wheat? You have no shortage of money."

"Mother! Grinding wheat by hand gives exercise and disease does not come. Second, grinding wheat is more virtuous than cooking."

When the mother-in-law and sister-in-law heard it, they felt that the daughter-in-law was right. They said to their respective husbands: 'Bring a mill to the house, we will all grind wheat.' Every day all the sisters-in-law started grinding two and a half seers of wheat in the mill.

Now the younger daughter-in-law saw that the maidservant comes to the house to wash the dirty utensils. We should clean our dirty utensils ourselves because there is God in everyone, so why should someone else clean our dirty clothes!

The next day he washed all the utensils. Mother-in-law said: "Daughter-in-law! At least think, washing utensils will wear off your jewellery, your clothes will get spoiled…."

"Mother! The smaller the work, the greater its greatness. In the Yagya of the Pandavas, Lord Krishna did the work of picking up false leaves."

The next day the mother-in-law sat down to wash the utensils. Seeing him, all the daughters-in-law started washing utensils.

The servant used to come to sweep the house. Now the younger daughter-in-law got up early in the morning and started sweeping. Mother-in-law asked: "Daughter-in-law! Have you planted the broom?"

"Mother! You don't ask. If I speak to you, then my hands get used to it."

"Brooming is the job of the servant, why do you do it?"

"Manji! It is mentioned in 'Ramayana' that great sages used to live in the forest, but instead of going to their cottage, God first went to Shabari's cottage. Because Shabari used to sweep secretly every day, clearing the way for Pampasar. Let the pebbles not prick the feet of sages and sages while passing by.

The mother-in-law saw that this younger daughter-in-law would rob everyone because she alone takes everyone's virtue. Now the mother-in-law and all the daughters-in-law started sweeping together.

In a house where there is mutual love, Lakshmi increases and where there is discord, there comes poverty. Seth's wealth started increasing day by day. He made ornaments and clothes for all the women in the house. Now the younger daughter-in-law went to the elder sister-in-law with the jewelry she had received from her father-in-law and said: "You have children, if you marry them, you will have to get jewelry made. I don't have any child yet. That's why you keep these jewelry."

The daughter-in-law gave some jewelry to her sister-in-law and distributed some money and clothes among the servants. When the mother-in-law saw it, she said: "Daughter-in-law! What are you doing? Your father-in-law has made ornaments for everyone and you gave them to your sister-in-law and distributed the money and clothes among the servants!"

"Mother! What will I do by collecting so much alone? If my things are useful to a needy person, then there is spiritual satisfaction and there is an indelible merit in donating!"

Mother-in-law got interested in daughter-in-law's talk. She went to Seth and said: "I will distribute dhoti-saree among the servants and I myself will pay the fees to the children of the poor families living nearby. How much money I have, it is good if it is useful to someone. Don't know when death will come. And everything should be left here! It is better to do good deeds with your own hands.

Seth was very happy that earlier she used to fight while giving something to the servants, but now she says that 'I will give it myself.' When the mother-in-law started giving things to others, other daughters-in-law also started giving them. The servants also became happy and started working as per their heart and there was prosperity in the neighborhood.

It comes in the Gita:

यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठस्तत्देवेतरो जनः।

Satyapramanam kurute lokastadanuvartate.

Whatever a great man does, other men do the same. Whatever he proves, other human beings behave accordingly.ʹ

The behavior of the younger daughter-in-law not only improved her house, but also had a good effect on the neighborhood, their house also improved. With the spirit of giving, love and brotherhood increased. In this way, the wisdom that the daughter-in-law got from the satsang made her house and many other houses happy!

सत्संगी माँ-बाप की बेटी।

 एक धनी सेठ के सात बेटे थे। छः का विवाह हो चुका था। सातवीं बहू आयी, वह सत्संगी माँ-बाप की बेटी थी। बचपन से ही सत्संग में जाने से सत्संग के सुसंस्कार उसमें गहरे उतरे हुए थे। छोटी बहू ने देखा कि घर का सारा काम तो नौकर चाकर करते हैं, जेठानियाँ केवल खाना बनाती हैं उसमें भी खटपट होती रहती है। बहू को सुसंस्कार मिले थे कि अपना काम स्वयं करना चाहिए और प्रेम से मिलजुल कर रहना चाहिए। अपना काम स्वयं करने से स्वास्थ्य बढ़िया रहता है।

उसने युक्ति खोज निकाली और सुबह जल्दी स्नान करके, शुद्ध वस्त्र पहनकर पहले ही रसोई में जा बैठी। जेठानियों ने टोका लेकिन फिर भी उसने बड़े प्रेम से रसोई बनायी और सबको प्रेम से भोजन कराया। सभी बड़े तृप्त व प्रसन्न हुए।

दिन में सास छोटी बहू के पास जाकर बोलीः "बहू ! तू सबसे छोटी है, तू रसोई क्यों बनाती है ? तेरी छः जेठानियाँ हैं।"

बहूः "माँजी ! कोई भूखा अतिथि घर आ जाय तो उसको आप भोजन क्यों कराते हो ?"

"बहू ! शास्त्रों में लिखा है कि अतिथि भगवान का स्वरूप होता है। भोजन पाकर वह तृप्त होता है तो भोजन कराने वाले को बड़ा पुण्य मिलता है।"

"माँजी ! अतिथि को भोजन कराने से पुण्य होता है तो क्या घरवालों को भोजन कराने से पाप होता है ? अतिथि में भगवान का स्वरूप है तो घर के सभी लोग भी तो भगवान का स्वरूप है क्योंकि भगवान का निवास तो जीवमात्र में है। और माँजी ! अन्न आपका, बर्तन आपके सब चीजें आपकी हैं, मैं जरा सी मेहनत करके सबमें भगवदभाव रखके रसोई बनाकर खिलाने की थोड़ी-सी सेवा कर लूँ तो मुझे पुण्य होगा कि नहीं होगा ? सब प्रेम से भोजन करके तृप्त होंगे, प्रसन्न होंगे तो कितना लाभ होगा ! इसलिए माँजी ! आप रसोई मुझे बनाने दो। कुछ मेहनत करूँगी तो स्वास्थ्य भी बढ़िया रहेगा।"

सास ने सोचा कि ʹबहू बात तो ठीक कहती है। हम इसको सबसे छोटी समझते हैं पर इसकी बुद्धि सबसे अच्छी है।ʹ

दूसरे दिन सास सुबह जल्दी स्नान करके रसोई बनाने बैठ गयी। बहुओं ने देखा तो बोलीं- "माँजी ! आप परिश्रम क्यों करती हो ?"

सास बोलीः "तुम्हारी उम्र से मेरी उम्र ज्यादा है। मैं जल्दी मर जाऊँगी। मैं अभी पुण्य नहीं करूँगी तो फिर कब करूँगी ?"

बहुएँ बोलीं- "माँजी ! इसमें पुण्य क्या है ? यह तो घर का काम है।"

सास बोलीः "घर का काम करने से पाप होता है क्या ? जब भूखे व्यक्तियों को, साधुओं को भोजन कराने से पुण्य होता है तो क्या घरवालों को भोजन कराने से पाप होता है ? सभी में ईश्वर का वास है।"

सास की बातें सुनकर सब बहुओं को लगा कि ʹइस बात का तो हमने कभी ख्याल ही नहीं किया। यह युक्ति बहुत बढ़िया है !ʹ अब जो बहू पहले जग जाय वही रसोई बनाने बैठ जाये। पहले जो भाव था कि ʹतू रसोई बना....ʹ तो छः बारी बँधी थीं लेकिन अब ʹमैं बनाऊँ, मैं बनाऊँ...ʹ यह भाव हुआ तो आठ बारी बँध गयीं। दो और बढ़ गये सास और छोटी बहू। काम करने में ʹतू कर, तू कर....ʹ इससे काम बढ़ जाता है और आदमी कम हो जाते हैं पर ʹमैं करूँ, मैं करूँ....ʹ इससे काम हलका हो जाता है और आदमी बढ़ जाते हैं।

छोटी बहू उत्साही थी, सोचा कि ʹअब तो रोटी बनाने में चौथे दिन बारी आती है, फिर क्या किया जाय ?ʹ घर में गेहूँ पीसने की चक्की पड़ी थी, उसने उससे गेहूँ पीसने शुरु कर दिये। मशीन की चक्की का आटा गर्म-गर्म बोरी में भर देने से जल जाता है, उसकी रोटी स्वादिष्ट नहीं होती लेकिन हाथ से पीसा गया आटा ठंडा और अधिक पौष्टिक होता है तथा उसकी रोटी भी स्वादिष्ट होती है। छोटी बहू ने गेहूँ पीसकर उसकी रोटी बनायी तो सब कहने लगे की ʹआज तो रोटी का जायका बड़ा विलक्षण है !ʹ

सास बोलीः "बहू ! तू क्यों गेहूँ पीसती है ? अपने पास पैसों की कमी नहीं है।"

"माँजी ! हाथ से गेहूँ पीसने से व्यायाम हो जाता है और बीमारी नहीं आती। दूसरा, रसोई बनाने से भी ज्यादा पुण्य गेहूँ पीसने का है।"

सास और जेठानियों ने जब सुना तो लगा कि बहू ठीक कहती है। उन्होंने अपने-अपने पतियों से कहाः ʹघर में चक्की ले आओ, हम सब गेहूँ पीसेंगी।ʹ रोजाना सभी जेठानियाँ चक्की में दो ढाई सेर गेहूँ पीसने लगीं।

अब छोटी बहू ने देखा कि घर में जूठे बर्तन माँजने के लिए नौकरानी आती है। अपने जूठे बर्तन हमें स्वयं साफ करने चाहिए क्योंकि सबमें ईश्वर है तो कोई दूसरा हमारा जूठा क्यों साफ करे !

अगले दिन उसने सब बर्तन माँज दिये। सास बोलीः "बहू ! विचार तो कर, बर्तन माँजने से तेरा गहना घिस जायेगा, कपड़े खराब हो जायेंगे...।"

"माँजी ! काम जितना छोटा, उतना ही उसका माहात्म्य ज्यादा। पांडवों के यज्ञ में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने जूठी पत्तलें उठाने का काम किया था।"

दूसरे दिन सास बर्तन माँजने बैठ गयी। उसको देख के सब बहुओं ने बर्तन माँजने शुरु कर दिये।

घर में झाड़ू लगाने नौकर आता था। अब छोटी बहू ने सुबह जल्दी उठकर झाड़ू लगा दी। सास ने पूछाः "बहू ! झाड़ू तूने लगायी है ?"

"माँजी ! आप मत पूछिये। आपको बोलती हूँ तो मेरे हाथ से काम चला जाता है।"

"झाड़ू लगाने का काम तो नौकर का है, तू क्यों लगाती है ?"

"माँजी ! ʹरामायणʹ में आता है कि वन में बड़े-बड़े ऋषि-मुनि रहते थे लेकिन भगवान उनकी कुटिया में न जाकर पहले शबरी की कुटिया में गये। क्योंकि शबरी रोज चुपके-से झाड़ू लगाती थी, पम्पासर का रास्ता साफ करती थी कि कहीं आते-जाते ऋषि-मुनियों के पैरों में कंकड़ न चुभ जायें।"

सास ने देखा कि यह छोटी बहू तो सबको लूट लेगी क्योंकि यह सबका पुण्य अकेले ही ले लेती है। अब सास और सब बहुओं ने मिलके झाड़ू लगानी शुरू कर दी।

जिस घर में आपस में प्रेम होता है वहाँ लक्ष्मी बढ़ती है और जहाँ कलह होता है वहाँ निर्धनता आती है। सेठ का तो धन दिनोंदिन बढ़ने लगा। उसने घर की सब स्त्रियों के लिए गहने और कपड़े बनवा दिये। अब छोटी बहू ससुर से मिले गहने लेकर बड़ी जेठानी के पास गयी और बोलीः "आपके बच्चे हैं, उनका विवाह करोगी तो गहने बनवाने पड़ेंगे। मेरे तो अभी कोई बच्चा है नहीं। इसलिए इन गहनों को आप रख लीजिये।"

गहने जेठानी को देकर बहू ने कुछ पैसे और कपड़े नौकरों में बाँट दिये। सास ने देखा तो बोलीः "बहू ! यह तुम क्या करती हो ? तेरे ससुर ने सबको गहने बनवाकर दिये हैं और तूने वे जेठानी को दे दिये और पैसे, कपड़े नौकरों में बाँट दिये !"

"माँजी ! मैं अकेले इतना संग्रह करके क्या करूँगी ? अपनी वस्तु किसी जरूरतमंद के काम आये तो आत्मिक संतोष मिलता है और दान करने का तो अमिट पुण्य होता ही है !"

सास को बहू की बात लग गयी। वह सेठ के पास जाकर बोलीः "मैं नौकरों में धोती-साड़ी बाँटूगी और आसपास में जो गरीब परिवार रहते हैं उनके बच्चों को फीस मैं स्वयं भरूँगी। अपने पास कितना धन है, किसी के काम आये तो अच्छा है। न जाने कब मौत आ जाय और सब यहीं पड़ा रह जाय ! जितना अपने हाथ से पुण्य कर्म हो जाये अच्छा है।"

सेठ बहुत प्रसन्न हुआ कि पहले नौकरों को कुछ देते तो लड़ पड़ती थी पर अब कहती है कि ʹमैं खुद दूँगी।ʹ सास दूसरों को वस्तुएँ देने लगी तो यह देख के दूसरी बहुएँ भी देने लगीं। नौकर भी खुश हो के मन लगा के काम करने लगे और आस-पड़ोस में भी खुशहाली छा गयी।

ʹगीताʹ में आता हैः

यद्यदाचरति श्रेष्ठस्तत्तदेवेतरो जनः।

स यत्प्रमाणं कुरूते लोकस्तदनुवर्तते।।

ʹश्रेष्ठ मनुष्य जो-जो आचरण करता है, दूसरे मनुष्य वैसा-वैसा ही करते हैं। वह जो कुछ प्रमाण कर देता है, दूसरे मनुष्य उसी के अनुसार आचरण करते हैं।ʹ

छोटी बहू ने जो आचरण किया उससे उसके घर का तो सुधार हुआ ही, साथ में पड़ोस पर भी अच्छा असर पड़ा, उनके घर में भी सुधर गये। देने के भाव से आपस में प्रेम-भाईचारा बढ़ गया। इस तरह बहू को सत्संग से मिली सूझबूझ ने उसके घर के साथ अनेक घरों को खुशहाल कर दिया !
